Relaxation massage or sports massage: which to choose
The differences between a relaxation massage and a sports massage, and how to know which suits you best.
Choosing between a relaxation massage and a sports massage mostly depends on what you want from the session: to switch off, or to feel more intense work. This guide explains the differences so you can choose with confidence.
What is a relaxation massage?
Relaxation massage uses slow, long, flowing strokes. Pressure is usually gentle to medium and the pace is unhurried. The aim is for you to feel comfortable and switch off for the hour.
Who it's for
- Anyone wanting a break in a busy week.
- People looking for a calm moment on holiday.
- Those who prefer pleasant, non-invasive pressure.

What is a sports massage?
Sports massage uses firmer pressure and a more dynamic pace. It's designed for active people — runners, gym-goers, padel players or surfers.
It's a wellbeing activity and does not replace assessment or treatment by a healthcare professional. If you have an injury, please check with one first.

Key differences
Pressure
Relaxation massage is gentle to medium; sports massage is firmer. In both cases you can ask for it to be adjusted at any time.
Pace
Relaxation massage is slow and continuous. Sports massage combines quicker, more energetic techniques.
How you feel afterwards
After a relaxation massage people often feel calm and want to take the rest of the day easy. After a sports massage the body usually feels worked and lighter.
What about chiromassage?
If you're unsure, chiromassage is a middle ground: it combines several manual techniques and adapts to how you feel on the day.
How to decide
Ask yourself: do you mainly want to relax, or do you prefer intense pressure? Do you lead a very active life, or do you want to switch off? If in doubt, tell us when you get in touch and we'll help.
